Herbert A. Simon considered design science to be a body of knowledge about design. In this article, I focus on two design movements indicative of this growing maturity and transformation. In retrospective studies, the outcome of interest has already occurred (or not occurred – e.g., in controls) in each individual by the time s/he is enrolled, and the data are collected either from records or by asking participants to recall exposures. By contrast, in prospective studies, the outcome (and sometimes even the exposure or intervention) has not occurred when the study starts and participants are followed up over a period of time to determine the occurrence of outcomes. Typically, most cohort studies are prospective studies (though there may be retrospective cohorts), whereas case–control studies are retrospective studies.
Typically, design studies are developed iteratively, going into progressively more depth as needed. During that time I worked with many companies dominated by IT and engineering groups who routinely developed 20–50 or more designs that were launched, with the expectation that perhaps 1–2 would ‘succeed’ (always arbitrarily defined). I also worked with companies that were convinced that they really did not need advanced market information because they ‘led’ the market.
Analyzing this information can help develop a product or service that can better fulfill your customer's needs and requirements. Market research is used to help the company make decisions that will impact them financially. For example, how will this increase market share or bring more profit to the bottom line? Design research, however, provides data on how the product will be used by the customer and the experience they will have when using it.
